	On my 1898 Krag rifle it appears that the side plate has had some kind of very thin plating at one time. What was the purpose and or was this normal? Ken

	Is it chrome plating? if so, it may have spent some time on an honor guard detail, or used for ceremonies.

	Yes it looks like a very thin chrome plate and is worn about 20% off and the rest is very thin. Ken
