This 1896 Carbine has the late, short stock with no saddle ring.

milgunsguy:  That's a nice looking carbine.  What is the serial number?  Does it have a stock 'cartouche'?

I believe this to be one of the 736 short forearm/no sling bar 1896 carbines assembled in 1901 as described by Brophy in "The Krag Rifle" on page 54.

The receiver is marked "1896" without the word "model".

There is no boxed date-and-initials cartouche on the left side of the stock. There is a circle-P in the usual location.

The serial number is 33,xxx.
