Model 98 Krag information

In 1955 my uncle gave me a 30-40 Krag carbine for my birthday. I don't know where he got it, but I know he had hunted with it for probably 30-40 years prior to giving it to me. I, in turn, hunted deer with it for a long time and it accounted for a lot of venison. Although I don't hunt much anymore, I am curious about it after seeing one on a TV reality show. Because they made so few carbines, I always suspected it might have been cut down.
Receiver is marked U.S.  Model 1898  Springfield Armory, serial number 217356, no other markings. Stock is straight grip, no checkering or markings that I can find. Barrel is ~24" and is unmarked (did not disassemble). Front sight is a 3" long ramp with a simple blade. Rear sight has an elevation slider marked 2 to 20 with 25 yd graduations and a screw driven windage compensator with 8 graduations left and right, but no other markings. Barrel Band has a large capital U on the right side. Just ahead of the band on the right side is a 2" metal strip, 3/32" thick, that appears to be let into the stock. I don't know its purpose.
From the serial number it looks like it was built in 1899, but that is the only thing I've been able to find out. I would be grateful for anything you can tell me.

Without photos, it's impossible to tell much about your Krag.
However, from the info you did post:
  1.  If the barrel is ca. 24" long, it was never a carbine barrel - could be a cut-down rifle barrel.
  2.  A 3" long ramp for the front sight is a sporting modification.
  3.  The metal strip ahead of the band is the band retainer spring, which kept the band in place.
  4.  The rear sight, if an 1898-type, (the first to incorporate a windage knob) could be either for a rifle or carbine, the graduations being the same.  The carbine sight will have a letter 'C' marked on the right-hand side of the ramp.
On balance, your Krag is probably a cut-down and semi-sporterized rifle.

I believe it to be a cutdown based on the barrel length and description of the front sight.  That serial number is past the range of known 1898 carbines.  Pictures would definitely help.  There is a photos page on the KCA main page: (You need to Login to view media files and links) which has pictures of the various Krag rear sights.  I'm guessing that your rear sight is the 1902, which is very common.  It's possible that your stock may be a carbine stock that was installed rather than chopping up the rifle stock.  Again, pictures would help here.  Does your Krag have the upper hand guard?

Thanks for the information. I'm going to take a set of photos and send them as soon as I can figure out how to do that. In the meantime, the rear sight looks more like the 1902 version but the graduation lines are different from the picture in the photo section. They do not go through the numbers and there are definitely 25 yd graduations as well. I never mentioned the pop up peep site, was that present in both versions? Again, thanks for the info. I'll get pictures off soon
