New member intro and question.

Hello from WI!
I am a farmer from WI who just this past year was given the privilege to hold on to a family heirloom, a 1996 Krag, which my Great Grandfather carried in the Spanish-American War. This rifle is complete with bayonete, scabbard and ammo belt. This was also the rifle that my Grandfather was using when he accidently shot his son, my uncle, during a deer drive in the late 1940's. My uncle survived and he kept the rifle until it was given to his son who gave it to me after his father passed away. It will be passed on to one of my daughters along with the history and stories. I will try to post a photo or two and if successful you will understand my question.
My question is what to do with a broken stock. This crack happened a few years before I came into possession. The crack runs horizontal from rear of the trigger guard back 8" ? towards the butt plate. With only a little twist of the butt the crack opens up quite a bit. It reminds me of a loose tooth ready to fall out. I had a friend look at it and he suggested gluing and pinning it together. I didn't want any pins or evidence of a repair but after removing the stock this evening I think it is inevitable if I want to retain the original stock. My other option was to replace the stock and keep the original. What is the right thing to do? I would love to take a WI whitetail with it some day. Thanks, Joe.

Joe,

This is a fantastic family heirloom!!

That is too bad about the stock.  My local gunsmith is amazing with stock work and could epoxy it and make that crack disappear.  He has done a few more my brother and myself over the years.  The problem is that we are in New York state.

Maybe you can find a gunsmith closer to you that can help you out.

Best regards,
Tom

I repaired one that was almost identical, myself.  One hole had already been drilled by someone, right in the P proof mark, and a screw put in.  So I just drilled a couple more holes, countersinking them so that I could later put wooden plugs over the heads of the brass screws.  Next I mixed up some thin clear epoxy and used a syringe to inject the epoxy through the holes until it flowed out the crack.  Then I tightened the screws, cleaned the excess epoxy off and put my wood plugs over the screwholes.  It ought to be good for another 100yrs.  That's what I'd do if I were you.  Take your time and you'll hardly be able to tell it was repaired.  Yours is a bit longer than mine, you might need screws from the bottom near the front and from the top near the rear.

Welcome to KCA. Don't fret the stock is repairable and easy for someone that works with wood or a gunsmith, but vet anyone you let work on this weapon. I've made similar repairs with cracked and broken stocks. If I were you I'd wrap it to stabilize it until it is repaired. Very nice history of this weapon. Please pics of your family with the Krag.

Let me welcome you as well!  That is a great story, and a great heirloom to receive... especially with the added history.  I agree that it is completely repairable.  Are you thinking of shooting it in competition?  It should be great for Camp Perry!

The rifle I shot last year was the one I repaired, didn't you notice Paul?  I'll have to get after the "behind the magazine well" cracks on my other 92/96.  I think the OPs 96 would retain more value with a repaired original stock than it would with a newly made repro.

Agree with madsenshooter.  From my point of view, there is not much loss in value if the repair is well done & difficult to see.  Major drop in value if it is a newly made replacement stock.
