I saw an old add on ebay today, circa 1938.  It indicates useful, but incorrect, sporters were being cobbled together right up to the eve of WW2, when parts were cheap & available and money was hard to come by.

I was glancing through Brophy's, "The Krag Rifle", today.  I noticed he had information, on page 179, on Hudson Sporting Goods.  Apparently in 1939, Hudson was selling the last of the 'Bannerman Krags', which utilized 1903 Springfield stocks adapted to fit the Krag action.  Hence, the peculiar sheet metal barrel band well forward of the hand-guard.
