Can military ammo be aged according to the head stamp numbers? If so what do each mean? I have ammo the has an "F" @ 12 o'clock, "01" @ 4 o'clock and "12" @ 8 o'clock. Thanks, Joe.

ALH:  It appears your ammo was made at Frankford Arsenal in December of 1901.  (Attached is a photo of a cartridge produced at Frankford in May of 1898).

Thanks! Can it be safe to assume the digits @ the 8 o'clock position is month of production? Joe

Yes . . . The month is at eight, the year at four.
