I know next to nothing on these guns. Bid on this cause I thought it looked like a neat old gun for the price. $385 after tt&l. Can yall tell me anything about it? Obviously the butt pad isnt original. Stock? Sights? Did I over pay? Thanks ahead of time!

Looks like an 1898 with a cut barrel, aftermarket front sight and rear peepsight instead of ramped sight ,sporterized aftermarket stock. The only things that appear to be original is the action and the one barrel band. This could be an excellent shooter though I had a real nice bubba rifle before. I did the same thing when I purchased my 2 previous Springfield's bought bubba rifles until I finally bought a near complete original, but now I also own a bubba Norwegian. These things will make you crazy  Cheesy

Thanks! I try not to buy stuff that I dont know about but I figured it would be a fun gun to pop a doe with in the fall. After a thorough check up should I be good to load her up and go?

Likely not the first bambi it's popped.  Not too bad messed up, should still shoot fine and do what you want it to.  Price you paid wasn't bad, I've seen people asking for ones that a messed up a lot more.  Happy hunting!

Nice looking old rifle. Everbody should have at least one Bubba Krag. I've had a few over the years, am currently down  to one. Most of them shoot pretty well, they're lots of fun.

The rifle appears to be in good condition as long as the bolt is matched you should be good to go, if not I recomend checking the headspace. Also just me being extra safe I always dissassemble clean an reassemble a used gun before I go shooting, just checking for all the parts and makingshure there is no extreme dirt anywhere. Buddy of mine bought an Astra 400 took it to the range, there was some pretty rough build up in it that it took the firing pin about 3sec to hit the primer after pulling the trigget.

Looks awfully close to that "magic" barrel length - what's the serial number - not 388xxx, give or take, is it?

Listing says serial is- 265012 and barrel length is listed as 25".

What "magic" barrel length do you speak of?

Blew right past the fine print! Thanks for the heads up.

Am looking for similar guns with 26" barrels - have found two so far, want another to make a stack. Just a quirk of mine. Also looking for 2100 yard M1901 sights - part of same quirk.

Sorry, already knew about it, so, no FF!

Have dug up two of those "from the brush". Neither has the correct stock, but one has the correct sights. Total expenditure to date - for both - under $1200 - and they're nice clean specimens, not mint like that one, but quite displayable when restored. I'm torn on what to do with the one which came in a carbine stock with 1902C sight - very similar to the specimen on the SA museum website. There have to be some as-yet unknown facts about those trials.

I WILL pay a finder's fee for the following:

(1) Rear sight for a Springfield-Hotchkiss carbine (M79 buckhorn, 6x14, marked H.C. on base and leaf)
(2) Rear sight for Krag as above (M1901Cx2100).
(3) Cleaning rod for an 1867 Navy Cadet rolling block.
(4) Cleaning rod (possibly 2) for an 1865 Springfield-Joslyn

I don't (cannot afford to) pay retail - so these have to be sleeper leads where the goods can be purchased way under the radar. Cheeky? Sorry - my game, my rules.

Dick:  Do you think the auction "BoO&F" is the real deal?  They didn't really provide any revealing photos.

I'd have to assume/believe it is - it's on the list on the homepage as an "O" which means that Tom Pearce personally vetted it, as opposed to the "R" designation which means the rifle was only "reported" but not actually seen by him, hands-on. He has owned at least three over the years, and I think that was his long-term keeper - hard to see how it could be upgraded.

The only photographable feature, without dismounting the stock - which they were probably loathe to do - would be the rear sight. S/N was already stated and the front sight (blade) difference, while real, is very hard to see.

Mine, due to the stock issue(s) will always be mongrels, but still interesting, and still very fortunate acquisitions. I'm hoping that 5MF sheds some additional light on the BoOF rifles. I am particularly intrigued by the fact that the SA specimen is in carbine wood - this might lend some credence to mine. I'm not touching that one (388786) until the matter is resolved, or at least until more is known.

389182 will be "restored" at some point - have not yet decided whether to stretch its' (undoubtedly original) stock, or shorten a full-length one. Leaning strongly towards the former to avoid sacrificing another genuine stock. Does anyone have a good front end - long enough to splice under the band? I'd much rather salvage an original stock broken across the magazine, or having a shattered wrist, or checkered or pistol-gripped, for example, than go the repro forend route. I'd always figured on two joints, as one also needs to preserve the original patina appearance of the exposed tip.

Somewhere out there lies just what you need for your restoration Dick.  You know lots of forearms got lopped off.  then there's the option of finding a broken stock.  I have a repro forearm that I had made from European walnut.  Gotta put that thing together someday.

(back to original questions)
toledo:  Your Krag 'sporter' is a cut-down U.S. Krag infantry rifle.  The stock is actually a military stock that has been re-shaped, thinned down, and 'checkered'.  Your metal looks quite nice and workmanship is better than Bubba.  Your front sight appears to be a Lyman 'banded' ramp and the rear sight is a 'no-drill' Pacific K-1.  It should be a nice hunting rig.  Its value is its utility to you and others.  U.S. Bolts are not serial numbered to action.  Inspect locking lug area for cracks.  Read past threads on KCA Forum regarding ways to check head space.  I hope it has a fine bore and is a fun shooter for you.  (Sight pictures attached).
