1901 Carbine?

I hope someone can set me straight. I have an 1898 model Krag (carbine?). I see no signs on the stock where it has been cut or remodeled.  The serial number is 480030. All the information that I can find says that the number is too high, but there it is. I looks to have the correct carbine rear sight. Is it a cut down rifle? or a true carbine?

The stock may not have been remodeled - Model 1899 carbine nstocks are around, if you look. Does the stock have a cartouche? How is the band retained - spring or pin? How long is the stock - 30" or 32"?

A correct carbine barrel may have been installed, and sights are no problem at all. And, with that high a number, it is theoretically possible - though very unlikely - that some sort of rebuild or replacement process might have been involved.

To be a "real" 1898 carbine, as originally produced, serial must be in the 112-135K range, give or take, with the greatest concentration being around 118-119K, with a minor bump around 130-132K. 480K is totally off-base, it has been put-together in some manner.

Than for your reply. The stock is 32 inches. It has a cart of 1901, left side of stock. Nose of stock is rounded. Band is retained by a spring.

tbrown453:  Welcome to the KCA forum.
It sounds like you have a real model 1899 carbine stock, however, any 1898 or 1899 barreled action will fit into that stock.  Also, most Krag barrels will screw into and index properly into a model 1898 action.
Some pictures would be helpful in getting more feed-back on your Krag.  Especially relevant would be pictures of the front sight base and muzzle area.  Pictures of your rear sight and hand-guard would also be of interest.
Exactly, how long is your barrel from muzzle to 'closed' bolt face?
(attached photo shows detail of a real Krag front sight attachment to barrel).
