I have a 98 Krag completely original and it is all completely nickel plated.  I would like to know how it came to be nickel plated and what function it was it used for (i.e., honor guards, parades, funerals and maybe guarding embassies.)  Would like some help if possible in determining it's use.

JR Ritts:  Welcome to the KCA Forum.  If you post some pictures of your 'plated' Krag, you will get more complete answers.
My hunch is that your Krag was probably 'plated' by a VFW post for ceremonial use.  They thought this was spiffy for some reason.

And then the question is "is it safe to shoot?"  A lot of VFW Krags have barrels that have been messed about.
