a few weeks ago, i received two peep sights for my 1898 krag.    (You need to Login to view media files and links);  i decided that one could stay orignal and the other could be reamed out and used for hunting.

what size hole should it be taken to?

I'd enlarge it very gradually until you get a size that is comfortable for your eyes.

FWIW, I believe your image is reversed!

Todd's image is correct and a nice job of showing detail. Dick's advice is good.

(S&S Firearms has been a good source for me for small parts to re-build some Krag sights. Check 'Rod Bayonet 1903 Springfield', if you don't see a 1902 part under 'Krag').

I have a spare 1902 peep/blade that is pitted and bare of finish. I plan to 're-brown' it and gradually enlarge the hole to use it on a 'shooter'.

Apparently, my eyes are backwards!!!!!

That's what happens when you get old and don't look at something while you are talking about it.

The original aperture for the Sgt Peep is incredibly small... but CMP rules allows for enlarging the peep to a maximum of 0.1.  I have a spare 1902 sight that I enlarged to 0.07 (which is about as large as you can go with it) and that is very user friendly... not quite as large of a peep as a Garand, but still much better.  I kept my original in original condition to put back on the rifle eventually.
