Hi Redcoat,
Cutdown sporters can be great for just ole plinking fun, hunting, or even competitive shooting in the right venue. I use one of my Krags (a full military) for CMP matches, but I use my cutoff sporter for cast bullet matches, and it's very rewarding! Krags, be it cutoff or as-issued are a wonderful rifle to have, and one of the greatest designs ever bestowed on the world!!!
For a decent cutoff sporter, you should never expect to pay more than $500, and I would imagine you could find a great shooter for under $400. There are those out there who value their sporters like they're made of gold... and command a premium price, but I would avoid that. Reminds me of an episode of American Rifle, where this guy took a good original full military Krag (probably worth upwards of $1,500) to the shop, and paid the gunsmith $2,500 to turn it into a cutoff sporter, destroying the inherent value of the original rifle, and turning it into a $500 shooter, LOL
