Hello everyone I recently acquired a 1898 Krag carbine Or what I believe to be so The only markings on the gun are model 1898 U.S Springfield Armory serial number 165700 There is an H stamped on the underside of the barrel where it meets the receiver and there is a zero on the bottom of the bolt handle The cartouche is there but illegible There is an E5 carved into the stock It has the 1902 sights I have gone over the entire gun With a jeweler's loupe the barrel measures exactly 22" and there are  other markings. The gun is complete other than the magazine cutoff assembly If anyone could help me identify this any better it would be greatly appreciated. Thank you shooting Jim

From the SRS records that I have, 98SRC serial numbers ran from a low of 118,XXX to a high of 156,XXX. Pictures of your carbine would help.

I strongly suspect anything over 135K - I'd bet that 156K one is a one-off fluke, a repaired piece, or an error in transposing data at some point.

Well, from what I can see...  it looks like you have an 1898 rifle that has been cutdown to carbine dimensions.  The stock is definitely a shortened rifle stock.  The front sight blade is not a Krag blade, and the sight post was most likely re-installed after the barrel was shortened to 22".  It almost looks like it's installed with JB Weld in the one picture.  It should still prove to be a good shooter, and fun rifle to hunt with!

Well, one thing, the stock appears to be incorrect. Please more pics - not so large, and in focus. Need a left-side overall, and some shots of the stock front end, and barrel band (which is not a Krag part).
