Spanish Mauser info

An old friend of mine asked me a few questions today about a rifle his dad had.  It's a Fabrica De Armes Oviedo 3040 1927.  I know that this is a Spanish Mauser.  He said his family believes that it was his service rifle.  He was a Hungarian National, but I believe he served in the US, as my friend is asking me if this would have been issued to a US service member.  Now his father did not see combat, but was involved with entertaining troops on overseas bases.  I'm fairly certain that it wasn't issued... but probably something he had shipped back, but I just don't know enough about it.  My friend speculated that someone gave it to his dad.

Any ideas?

Most likely something he was given.  If he was issued weapon more likely to be a 03 or 03A3, less likely a carbine or 1911.

My bet is that it came during the 1950s to 1960s period, from some place like Ye Olde Hunter.  Look for a post 1968 import stamp on the barrel.
