I inherited a Krag, and am looking for info

Hello all, I'm new to the forum.  I inherited a Krag from my grandfather.  I believe he purchased at some point between WWII and Korea (USMC).  He left some shooting notes in the trap door in the butt-stock indicating he shot it in the early 50's.  In all the time I'd known him, he was a pistol shooter and it was a safe queen.

Some info:
- On the receiver it says "Model 1898.  US Springfield Armory 462029"
- Behind the trigger guard there is a cartouche.  I can't make out the letter.  Maybe an A or a D, maybe something else.
- There is a U stamped on the barrel band.
- Under the bolt on the left side there is a cartouche that says, "JSA 1903"

I took several pictures and was hoping y'alls could help me identify what I've got, and perhaps a rough idea of its value? No intention to sell it, but simply interested to know.

Also, where may I find information about field stripping it, cleaning, etc.?

Much appreciated!

Looks like an 1898 rifle that has been cut down to carbine length and had a non Krag front site installed. Thats either an 1899 carbine stock or a cut down rifle stock. The sights are rifle sites. That is a somewhat commonly sporterized 1898 Krag. Basically they turned a Krag rifle into a handier Krag Carbine length gun. Value is very subjective but from what i know the sporterized Krags have less value than the original configuration Krags. Check Gun broker for an idea of value. That looks like a fine rifle. A keeper for sure. I have a similar version except mine was actually a carbine receiver and a carbine stock but the barrel was replaced with something similar to yours at one point. mine also had the rifle sites on it.  I am relatively new to Krags so there are many more knowledgeable on this board that will comment on yours.

Looks like you have an 1898 rifle that was cutdown and sporterized to make it a more practical hunting rifle.  You have a 1903 banded front sight.  The full length rifle stock was shortened to carbine length, and I suspect that you'll find a plug in the front filling in the hole created by the lightening channel in the stock under the barrel.  1902 rifle rear sight.  The mark behind the trigger guard is a circled "P" indicating that it was test-fired for "Proof."

Pretty nice sporter actually!  Should be a fine shooter and tons of fun at the range!  Since it's cutdown, there really is not much value like if it were original... in the $300 to $350 range.  How's the bore?  Also, what is the barrel length as measured from the muzzle to the closed bolt face?
