Krag 1899 carbine sight question
Mar 3rd, 2017 at 6:22pm
Print Post
Hello, this is my first post on the forum.  I am considering purchasing an 1899 carbine, but am concerned on the rear sight.  Everything on the gun looks original, but it has "C" stamped rear sight which I was told was for high speed ammo.  The serial number is 2286xx.

Where can i find info on this sight and gun configuration and if the sight was original?

Thanks,

Bryan

A "c" marked on the rear sight denotes carbine and would be correct for an 1899 carbine. There were changes in the sights due to some ammo issues. But the C was not used to delineate that to my knowledge. Pictures and more details would help further identify the sight and its characteristics.

I think you may have answered the question on the sight since it is stamped with a "C".

'Bryan'' - Welcome to the KCA Forum.

U.S. Model 1899 Krags were built as carbines, so it is generally the safest of the carbines to collect.

There is a lot of information on hand-guards and sights in the 'Photos' tab on the KCA main-page ('click' on "Visit the KCA Website Today", as it scrolls across the top of this page).

The 1901 carbine sight is the most common one on model 1899 carbines. It is marked in three places with a "C": left-side of base, left-side of 2,300yd. leaf, and on the V-notch.

Pay very close attention to 22" barrel at front-sight base and barrel crown. (This is where fakery occurs on bogus carbines and replacement barrels).

Photos of correct model 1899 carbine (1901 sight) and front-sight.

Oops - you posted some pictures while I was responding.

What I can see of the rear-sight looks like 1902 carbine sight, but, I can't see eye piece or elevation knob clearly.

I can't see front-sight clearly, either.

It is a nice looking carbine, but, wood repair and apparent stock crack in front of bolt-handle are serious blemishes.

I imagine value is about $800 to $1,000, but, the devil is always in the details (and they are hard to assess on the computer).

IMHO - Most collectors will hate that stock repair and not bite!
