Fun articles in the June 6, 1903, "Scientific American". I actually got it for the 50th Anniversary feature on the 'Soo Locks'.

The 1902 Springfield rifle article was a Bonus!

What a great article! Thank you for sharing.  They were very excited about that second locking lug! I can't imagine how excited they were the next year with essentially 3!

Preston - I'm glad you enjoyed the article.

BTW - The "1902" Springfield in the illustration does have the third 'safety lug'. (My photo of the drawing just does not show the line between the extractor and the safety lug very clearly).

The Krag action also has three "lugs". They are just all on the right side of the bolt. Two of them, (the 'safety lug' and the bolt handle root), only make contact if the front lug fails.

Thanks, a good article. Can you imagine today's SA featuring any kind of firearm?  Grin

What I would give for a M1902 rifle...

I have a couple of receivers if you can find the rest of it. There used to be a few barrels around but I haven't seen one in a while.
