A question for anyone out there that casts

Here is my situation.

I want to make duplicates of the original Springfield Armory loads for my 1873 trapdoor rifle, as described in great detail, by J. Spencer Wolf, in his book “Loading Cartridges for the Original 45-70 Springfield Rifle and Carbine”

To achieve this, I am looking for bullets cast from the LEE-90268 mold out of soft 20:1 lead, sized to .460” and lubed.

I cannot find this bullet cast by commercial casters, and I don’t know anyone that casts near me.

I would have no issues procuring the mold and providing it, but my lifetime need for this bullet would be around 250 pieces which would make getting into casting myself rather costly.

Is this something anyone out there that casts could help me with?

Many thanks.

Have you slugged the barrel of your carbine?

Have you checked Buffalo Arms and their dreadful new website?  They have the Lyman version of the original FA bullet, 20:1, lubed with SPG but sized .458, About $31 per box.  If you use these as a starting point, you may learn a lot.

Have you tried Track of the Wolf?

Where do you live? Might also try posting this on the castboolits forum, may be someone already casting this bullet.

Yes, I have slugged my 1873 rifle. I looked at the Buffalo Arms site, but they don't have what I am looking for. TOTW has the mold and everything else I need, but doesn't have the bullets.

I've loaded other stuff for it, but want to try the specific load in the book.

Try dipping a toe here and explain what you are looking for:

(You need to Login to view media files and links)

It's the dedicated area of the forum for seeking bullets.

If no action try the Single Shot area of the forum.

Good luck!

First things first: do a chamber cast so you know what your throat dimensions are. Cast bullet fit to the throat is waaaaay more important than groove diameter, no matter what rifle you're shooting.
