Greetings from Texas! I found this rifle many years ago at an old military surplus store in Fort Worth. It was in a group of rifles on consignment. I paid $250 for it. I was hoping that I could get some info from the knowledgeable members here about it's history and such.

Thanks!

Have you a photo of the entire rifle?

OK, thanks. That was the only photo that didn't download for me at first.

You have a Model 1898 Rifle, upgraded with a M1902 rear sight (which possibly indicates National Guard use - most rifles retained by the Army used the M1901) which has been modified post-service by cutting the barrel and installing a 1903 front sight. Barrel looks to have strong rifling - it should shoot well. There is no collector value, and if purchased "many" years ago for $250, you paid TOP dollar at the time - and it has not appreciated much since. Did not find any historical data on that number. Stock date matches serial, too bad it got cut. Enjoy!

Thanks for the info! I always assumed it had some modification history. It's a fun shooter.
