My father passed away and I was given two Krags from him. One which I know was my Opar's has a lyman sight. Was this a common sight or an alteration? I have attached a pictures.

Thank you in advance.

'ArkFunGuy' - Welcome to the KCA Forum. It is neat that you have a family heirloom Krag!

The aperture rear sight on your model 1896 Krag is a Lyman #34 Receiver-sight. This model was patented in 1895 and last cataloged in 1943. It was a commercial 'after-market' sight that required the Krag's receiver be 'drilled & tapped' and the removal of some Stock Wood.

This was a relatively popular sight for installation on 'sportered' military arms. Versions were made for the Krag, 1903 Springfield, Remington-Lee and Lee-Enfield.

IMHO - A 'sight collector' desiring one, would probably pay $125 to $200 for a nice working specimen. It is not unusual to see a Krag, altered for 'Hunting', that was once fitted and is now missing this sight.

Thank you, my other Krag has the correct sights and is unmodified. Bit I was not sure about the sight.

Again thank you.
BtW.. yes it is addicting

Sometimes, the altered Krags are the most fun to shoot.

Handier, because they are shortened to carbine length. By selection, it is not unusual for them to have fine bores.
