Took a much closer look at the sights and the sling on the rifle I acquired last Tuesday.  The stamp on the sling though partially obliterated appears to me to read "Rock Island Arsenal ***3".  The last number of the date is the only one readable.  The rear sight does have the "sgt peep" others have mentioned.  The pics of the bore are after a good cleaning, but it looks good to me.

The peep is on there in your pics, it can be pushed down so that you can see the notch.

I had been playing with it.  Put a drop of oil on the pivot and loosened it up some.  The detents provide a positive stop up or down.  The aperture is pretty small.

It's legal to drill it out and make it larger but I prefer the notch
