When viewing period photographs and trying to decipher Army and National Guard regimental markings, 'cap badges' have the regimental number above the crossed rifles (swords or cannons) and the company Letter below.

On the other hand, Haversacks and Pack Flaps appear to reverse this practice. (There's the Army for you)!

1. cap badge - 10th Regt./Company "I".

2. haversack - Co. "C"/3rd Conn. Regt.

3. back pack - Co. "F"/ U.S. 22nd Regt.

(note - The other numbers on canvass items, appear to be I.D. #s).
