From the Chief Ordnance Report ending 6/30/1904 (see link below) on page 51:

"As the fixtures, gauges, tool, etc., required for the manufacture of the United States magazine rifle, model of 1903, progressed, the manufacture of the model of 1898 rifle was gradually decreased until November last (11/1903), when it ceased."  There was no mention of manufacturing of model 1898's in the 1905 report. There was information on changes in the cartridge casing, however.

I'm glad you find it informative. However, the well is starting to run dry. I would like to find the 1892 Chief of Ordnance report, but it is proving difficult to locate.
