Maybe this should be filed under another heading, but this was new to me. Seems there was still Krag side loader influence at Springfield in the 1930's. Take that you Garand guys. I want one of these!

I had the same thought, having some experience with the Johnson.

I think this was actually in the 50s, thus the short fat cartridge. Springfield's experimenting with such things is what had McNamara, in the 60s, looking toward private vendors who could supply arms at a lower cost, without all the experimental off shoots the Armory (or ordnance in general) got into.  That led to that M-16 thingy.

Photo is marked 3 February, 1954.

The vertical operating-rod 'handle' is different. I guess that was necessary to give access to the 'side magazine-gate'.

BTW - The first High-Power rifle I ever fired was a Johnson in .30-06. Man was the recoil vicious! I was a solid, 5' 10"/ 135 pound, 15 year old. Shooting the Johnson from the sitting position, it practically rolled me onto my back.
