Krag stock differences

I'm off to look at a Krag stock that is supposedly in original military condition and not cut down.  The guy doesn't know whether it is an 1898 or what.  Can someone show me picks of the difference between the 1895-1896 stocks and the 1898?  The bolt cut is what I can't remember.

The last few times I tried finding/buying one of these both were wild goose chases.  lol

There are all kinds of photos in the photos section of the KCA main page.

Look where the bolt handle locks down on the stock.  That is where you can see the most difference between the 96 and 98 stocks

Everything else is a question of carbne or rifle length stocks

Yes, I was confused about the area where the bolt handle locks down.  Couldn't remember if the early ones had the rounded out cut or the square cut.

It's all for naught anyway.  The guy I saw today used to make custom rifle stocks back in the fifties and sixties, and used to toss the military stocks. But, he would keep one on hand so he would know how to route the inletting.  He had a couple of Mauser 98 stocks and one Krag.  When he started digging through his stuff and came up with the Krag another guy there bought it from him before I got there.

'realaleman' - Welcome to the KCA Forum. I'm sorry you missed snagging a Krag stock.

For future reference, here are pictures of bolt handle recess area on a model 1896 and model 1898 stock. (FWIW - The Stock 'bolt-notch' got simpler).

Thanks.  I am pretty disappointed.  Had to drive nearly two hours to get there.
