Magazine Rifle Mfg Delay Report

Here is a New York Times article on the Krag Jorgensen delay of manufacturing due to American inventor protests. It is not as sterile as the Annual Ordnance Department Report and has more "emotion" into it.

The newspaper article is dated February 12, 1893. The headlines read:

POSTPONING OF THE NEW RIFLE
INVENTORS HAVE SUCCEEDED IN
POSTPONING THE CHANGE

I believe the first monetary value of $40,000 was a typo and should have been $400,000 as stated in the rest of the article.

So there were four "exasperating" issues that likely gave Flagler heartburn.

1.  The requirement to give American inventors another look for the first magazine rifle. Thus delaying the manufacture of the Krag Jorgensen rifle.

2.  Russell and Livermore going to court for $100,000 claiming patent infringements.

3.  The Army's old guard clinging onto the old Springfield single shot.

4.  Developing a recipe for the cartridges smokeless powder.

But he obviously plodded on.

Here is the circular letter I believe was referred to in the New York Times article:

And here is General Order 16 that followed:

Perhaps the above does not seem all that impressive. How about Lt. General Miles wanting to suspend production of the Krag Jorgensen rifle at the Springfield Armory 3 days before the Spanish American War began? This came out of a March 1901 article from Ainslee's Magazine. The title is "The Miles-Corbin Feud" (Miles was the Army Commander). Below is a few paragraphs.

Here is another New York Times report on the Krag Jorgensen Rifle delay.  It was written 7/4/1893. The report is on the testing of American rifle designs, of which there were 14. Durst had four of the designs submitted. He pulled out of the competition once his designs were put through trials and failing the tests. Russell and Livermoore had three designs, also. They would later have a lawsuit for infringement on some of their patents as another post has addressed. The Krag was not tested during these American-only trials. None of the American designs would pass muster and the Krag was not sub-planted as the U. S. Magazine Rifle, Cal. 30, Model of 1892.
