So my 78 year old gunsmith just gave me a Model 1898 Springfield 30-40 Krag. After some preliminary research, it appears to be a rifle verison that was sporterized, cut down to "carbine length", Redfield Peep sight installed, magazine cut-off removed.

I produce videos for some folks in the gun industry, and initially I was looking for a 30-30 as a test rifle. It was by accident how I acquired this piece of American Military History!

Anyways, I am excited to learn about this caliber and rifle!

Appears to be a replacement stock, too. More pictures would help along with the S/N if you want even more info.

You came to the right place. You will get a lot of help on this.

A SIG guy handling a 100 year old Krag rifle! Nice to see.

No hand guard, no rear sight, different stock, rebluing, peep sight be damned! It's still a Krag at heart.

If you do a video on your sporterized Krag, please let us know. We'll be the first to watch it.

Welcome to the world of Krags! Too bad your gunsmith didn't give you an original unaltered rifle. Maybe next time.

Thanks fellas!

I will definitely post the video here.

Yes, an original 1898C with the correct serial number would have been nice..but HEY, beggars can't be choosers!  Wink Grin

Seriously, this is the 3rd rifle which he has given to me free of charge, so I am more than grateful!

I have been helping him sell various 'accumulations' [on my on-line accounts] he has accumulated as a Master gunsmith over the last 50 years or so! It has been a payback of sorts!

'AP2020' - Welcome to the KCA Forum. "SIG" must stand for "seeker of interesting guns" ... !

It would be fun to see more close-up pictures of your Krag. It looks like you have the makings of a nice 'target range' Krag there.

The stock forearm looks like a 'beaver-tail' style, so it is definitely a commercial stock.

It may be an illusion, but, your barrel profile looks heavier to me than an original Krag barrel. (Although, there appears to be a reflection from two possible sight-screw holes in your photo).

Any markings on the barrel? If it is a replacement, it might be a different caliber than .30-40.

An original Krag barrel will merely have a proof "P" on the bottom and an index line, at 9 o'clock, on the barrel and front face of the receiver ring.

Slick video!

(You should have mentioned KCA Forum. BTW - Bower's is a terrible information source on Krags).

Your current rear sight is a Redfield, #102-K, (Not William's, which is good - no holes required).

Your 'banded' front-sight appears to be a Lyman or Redfield.

Your bolt-sleeve has an after-market safety, probably Buehler.

Krag sight-screw threads are .156"X 30 tpi. You need 1901 sight screws. Originals show up on ebay. S&S Firearms, Glendale, N.Y., has reproductions.

Nice quick review on your sporterized 1898 Krag acquisition!

You can spend years researching and learning about all of the variations of the Krag rifle and never get it all. These experts at the Krag Collector's Association are the best source of Krag history for the serious (and novice) collector.

Thanks!
