I'm thinking some #%^&%$#% was trying to make a bastardized saddle ring carbine.

Yah, more photos!

Krag, #68900, is a "SRS hit". Frank Mallory documented it as a model 1896 carbine, turned in by the 6th Cavalry, 04/11/1900.

I have never seen a 'staple' attached to a Krag side-plate before. Almost certainly, this was done by or for a private owner.

What type of stock is on this Krag now?

The original model 1896 carbine stock would have had a carbine ring & bar on a plate at the stock wrist, just behind the magazine cut-off lever.

BTW - A replacement side-plate will need to be for the model 1896 action. The model 1898 side-plate is too thick to fit at the front 'tendon'.

Here you go "Red Ryder".

"With a Compass in the Stock and a Thing that Tells Time", you'll be ready for Christmas!

(p.s. - It looks like your extractor & bolt-collar have been fitted with a Leroy Rice 'peep-sight' for Hunting).

Small ring is on sporter with Rice peep sight. I now own two Krags. Can you give me history on second one? Appears to be original.

What is that?  23823?   What does the left side of all that read?

-------- Springfield Armory 23823

Would be great if you had a couple shots of the rear and front sights.

I can not read the number, with certainty, on your second Krag. The picture quality is too poor.

If the number is 28823, drop everything and immediately go out and buy a 'Super Lotto' ticket!

FWIW - #28823 is also in SRS data: "model 1896 carbine, 06/14/1900, 9th Cav., turned in".
The 9th Cavalry was a famous Black regiment.

(Only a small percentage of the almost 1/2 million U. S. Krag serial numbers were found in official documents, by Frank Mallory and others, who were working on the data collection).

Please confirm the serial number and post some better quality photographs. (Clear close-ups of front-sight/muzzle area, rear-sight/top & side views, stock forearm and wrist area, any metal or wood markings).

BTW - Your first Krag appears to be a model 1896 carbine that had its Stock updated to the longer 1899 style, during an armory rebuild.

Some civilian altered the replacement stock by adding a pistol grip and 'tossed' the carbine rear-sight and hand-guard.
This Krag carbine retains its late style carbine barrel-band and band retaining-spring.

The 'long forearm' 1899 style replacement stock for the model 1896 carbine dispensed with the saddle ring & bar.

No SRS "hit" for Krag #28828. But, that number is surrounded by a large number of model 1896 carbines in the SRS data.

Closest neighbors are #28823 and #28831. Both are model 1896 carbines turned in by 9th Cavalry on 06/14/1900.

No assumptions can be made on numbers being 'close'.
Because it is not listed pretty much guarantees that #28828 did not go to the 9th Cavalry.

Check your number very carefully with a good magnifying glass. It is very easy to misread Krag serial numbers. (In my experience, 3's, 6's, and 8's often get misread).

Back to carbine No. 1 - "Ole Deer Getter". (#68900)

It appears previous owner(s) had success, at least six times, in harvesting Bambi.

The six 'notches' along the forearm are kind of 'classic'.

I love this 'altered carbine'.

..... and Krag No. 2. - I remember from your earlier posts.

You really want to study that 28xxx serial number with a magnifier and get it certain!
