It is hard to trump seeing a Krag serial number, first hand, and being able to adjust lighting and to use magnification.

So ... #28828 it is!

(Photos often fool the eye).

"SRS" stands for Springfield Research Services. It was data collected and published, in a series of volumes, by the late Franklin Mallory (with some assistance from others).

The 'data' collected was mention of U. S. service arms by model and serial number in official documents.

Frank Mallory put his Krag serial number findings in the Appendix of "The Krag Rifle Story", second edition.

Thanks, but anyway, does it look authentic? It was inherited, will be passed down

Krag #28828 appears to be a legitimate model 1896 carbine, no doubt about it. This is further strongly supported by the "1895" marking.

Although the serial number is not a 'hit' in the SRS data, #28828 is solidly in a large block of exclusive carbine numbers.

BTW - (A minor observation): Your front-sight blade looks too high in your photos and is likely a replacement.

And, the rear sight seems to be a correct, M1896 Carbine sight.  A very good thing, indeed.
