I don't collect sabers and had to look up a picture of an Ames Saber you referred to. Beautiful piece of cutlery!

If you could please post a picture of your Krag and Saber and maybe some pictures of some of your "boxed" items, you certainly have a wonderfully appreciative audience here at KCA to show them to!

That's part of the wonderful world of milsurp collecting is sharing with others your passion.

I do not have a 'Mills Belt' for .45-70.

I have a 'Hurlburt Belt' for .30-40 and a messed-up .30-40 Mills Belt.

The head diameter of the .45-70 cartridge measures around .498". The rim diameter is around .603".

The head diameter of the .30-40 cartridge measures around .453". The rim diameter is around .536" to .541", depending on brand.

IMHO - What is significant, is the circumference of the two cartridges, because, that is how they are held in a woven cartridge belt.

(.30-40) - .453" head dia. X 3.14 = 1.42"

(.45-70) - .498" head dia. X 3.14 = 1.56"

The difference in the circumference of the two cartridges is .140 inches. (This is the approximate thickness of Nickel stacked on a Quarter).

FWIW - I imagine the length of each woven loop, on a .45-70 cartridge belt and .30-40 cartridge belt, would reflect this .140 inch difference.

My .30-40 'Hurlburt' cartridge-belt tightly holds Krag cartridges, but, it cannot be reasonably stretched to hold a .45-70 cartridge.

I imagine Krag cartridges might be retained in .45-70 woven-belt loops merely by their rims and gravity. The cartridges would be very loose and easily fall out the top.

With Krag related items it helps to be patient and know what you want. In time, things have a way of 'finding you'.

Attached:

1. - .30-40 Hurlburt belt - note .45-70 cartridge will not fit. (Belt was originally Khaki and was dyed blue at some point and has faded).

2. - The two cartridges compared - (The vernier shows .140", or, the difference in circumference of .45-70 and .30-40 cartridges, in the head area).

Thank you so much. Seems like the information that I was looking for, with much more detail.

I am currently looking at a couple of Hulburt belts , which will serve my purpose.

I appreciate your most informative information.

Here are some photos

1st is the Ames M1906 saber along with a S&W M1917 revolver. All this gear is original, even the M1904 saber hanger attached to the M1910 mounted pistol belt.

2nd is a 1937 dated M1903A1 Springfield  that I fired at Camp Perry in 2010

3rd 2010 Camp Perry M1 CArbine Match

4th is the BM59SL I had built last year. It is in 7.62 Nato and functions just great. I have 10 magazines, but there is also a stripper clip guide over the open bolt to allow loading the magazine.

My Forte is the M1903 Springfeild and the M1 Garand.  Just getting into learning about Krags.

Impressive, I like your uniform. I also have the Mills-itis and have too many of the darn critters. I usually wear either Span Am or Punitive Expedition uniforms and gear at my cas/wasa clubs monthly matches. We hold BAM matches a couple of times a year which is a whole lot of fun. I also have a nice group of 12 ga belts. Web gear is a lot more comfortable than leather to me. I found a forager belt with sg and rifle loops many years ago and haven’t had a leather gunbelt since. Your M1 or is it a BM59 is nice.

It's acceptable to be green on New Year's Day, St. Patrick's Day & the Day After, the first day at sea ... and everyday, if your name is Kermit.

Nice Parrott

I like the touch, in the (black & white) CW photos, of having an "Enfield" rifle and 'reversing' the images like a daguerreotype.

Good looking impressions!

The B&W with the cannon is an ACTUAL tintype photograph taken with a repro Original camera by a Period photographer. Took him about 20 minutes to prepare the plate. It was a bright Sunday morning about 9 AM and I had to stand there for about 60 seconds for the exposure. it came out very well and very detailed.

Some really cool pics!
Should you be at Perry this year, you are welcome to stop by the campground and visit a spell.  I can advise my spot later on (that's assuming I can get in there again! Ha).
