I use to have a pre-WW1 Mannlicher-Schoenauer carbine in 6.5X54mm M-S.

With its 'spool' magazine and bolt-handle attached at the mid-point of the bolt, it was 'smooth as silk' to operate.

Funny thing .... it relied on that long, 160 grain, round nosed projectile for effortless feed.
Reloads, with 139 grain spitzer bullets, would hopelessly 'hang-up' when the case-shoulder failed to clear a highly polished lobe in the feed-path.

The timing of the cartridge feed required the long 160 grain bullet nose to make contact with the feed ramp to angle the cartridge body over the lobe.

Some legendary actions can be very fussy regarding cartridge geometry.

I like the 38-55 option.  That would be a deer hunting legal rifle here in Ohio, if the total capacity was reduced to 3rd.  Not much of a selection bullet-wise though, unless one was figuring on cast.

I know of a .444 Marlin Krag.It was built for black bear hunting. It required opening the cartridge feed opening in the receiver. It works very well.

I’m having a gunsmith consider it for 45-70, if that fails I think that the 444 is the next best thing, still keeping the original idea of a 16-20” threaded barrel and using the silencerco hybrid and some large grain subsonic loads
