'soonerfan66':

FWIW - Your damaged hand-guard is a rifle hand-guard for the model 1896 sight.

It could probably best be salvaged by cutting out some of the wood (straight edges - cut on an angle to create a bevel) and gluing an appropriately sized, walnut 'arch shaped' patch, (possibly cut from a damaged 1903 Springfield hand-guard).

I would glue the patch and front cracks using Brownell's Acraglas.

Thanks for your help . I have bought a top hand guard for a M-1917 rifle hoping it would be close but it is same width it's entire lenghth while my Krag hand guard starts out one width but widens up as it goes back . Do you know by chance if a 1903 one is like the M-1917 or the Krag style ?

Did some looking and the 1903 hand guard does seem more shaped like Krag so I may give it a try .

I was just suggesting a source of 'donor wood' for a wood patch'.

Been trying to find something on youtube or something that shows a repair like I need but not much luck to have a better idea on doing the repair . Are you saying if I can find the right piece to cut out the damage to my hand guard then splice in a new section . Would it need to have some type of screen or something on the underside to help support it ?

That is what someone else suggested to and seems easiest also . Maybe sometime I will pick up an original . I love they way this shoots with the peep sight but I also like having a piece of history that has not been messed with . Thanks for all your help I really appreciate it .
