Aloha,  I'm new and I have a Krag that was modified to mount a peep sight on the left side of the rifle. I would like to find out what Make of peep sight was on the gun to if I can replace it. The gun has 3 tapped holes in the receiver and some wood removed from the stock .   Help will be greatly appreciated. Stoney

'Stoney' - Welcome to the KCA Forum.

A clear, focused, close-up photo of the area, where the sight mounted, will result in a more accurate answer.

BTW - Most receiver sights, for the Krag, only required two mounting holes.

'Three holes' on the Left-Side of the receiver suggests an off-set scope mount.

Sorry about the picture but when I tried to send it with the original message it was too big.  So I learned how to compress pictures and the attachment is the result.  Hope it helps you help me

'Stoney' - Actually, your receiver is drilled and tapped for only two receiver-sight screws - (green dots).

The red arrow indicates the hole (original) for the pin that retains the Krag's Ejector. Normally, this hole is covered by the top-rear of the Magazine Side-Plate.

Some of your side-plate and some wood have been cut away to accommodate a commercial receiver-sight base.

Your ejector-pin hole needs to be covered, by either a replacement side-plate or receiver sight. Otherwise, you risk having the ejector-pin and ejector falling out of your Krag.

'Stoney' - I do not recognize the Receiver-Sight 'hole pattern' on your Krag.

The removal of part of the side-plate and some wood is suggestive of a couple of out-of-production Lyman gun-sights.

I am formulating a theory, but, have a quick question: Is the front hole,
(the 'ejector-pin' hole), threaded?

(BTW - The end of a Krag ejector-pin is normally proud and visible. The 'outside-end', of the small diameter pin, has a shallow groove machined around it, for easy removal.
Your pin likely has been shortened to allow the outer part of the hole to be used for a sight mounting-screw. The hole appears enlarged).

Thank you for your very educated reply.  Ejector hole makes sense.  Out of production 2 hole Lyman sight also makes sense.   Your pictures are great I'm going to have to learn how to put arrows and dot on my pics.  Ideas where I can find one?

'Stoney' - I went brain dead, hallucinated a bit, and was wrong.

The front-hole on your action is a 'new' sight-hole.

(Your ejector-pin is safely under the altered side-plate. The pin's location is right below the side-plate screw).

Pictures showing normal parts:

'Stoney':

My theory is that your Krag, during its life, has been fitted for two different Receiver-Sights.

Its first commercial sight was a Lyman #33 or #34 for the Krag. The two sights have the same hole arrangement. (The difference is that the #34 has a 'click' adjustable windage knob).

I have marked your photo to show the diagonal holes that would have been used to mount the (#33 or #34) sight. The 'arrow' shows where the Lyman sight's elevation lever rubbed on your stock.

I have not quite figured out the lower rear hole.
(It is a very odd alignment, if the lower rear hole was used in conjunction with the front hole).

Maybe, just one screw was used to mount a different and later sight at the lower rear hole? (The Lyman model 48 - K, might be a candidate)?

The Krag version of the Lyman #33 & #34 sights show up from time to time on ebay. They are rather expensive.
IIRC - There may be two different elevation slide lengths available.

I know. You want to know - WW'br' Do?

I would put a Redfield, 'no drill', 102-K rear-sight on your Krag.

FWIW - The Redfield is a lot easier to find. It is a lot cheaper, than the Lyman sights. It would cover up the unused sight holes, modified side-plate, and mask the cut-away wood area.

Stoney: The lower-rear hole on your receiver could possibly have been a 'mistake'. It must have relatively few threads, because, it intersects with the hole for the magazine cut-off shaft.

BTW - The two holes for a Lyman #48 sight would be in a level alignment.
