Hi jnida,

More close-up picks of your Krag would help us better serve.

Pics of the muzzle, left/right receiver, etc.

Barrel length?... place a dowel/rod down the muzzle to a closed bolt face and mark the dowel at the muzzle opening. Carbine barrels measure 22 inches.

Just posting the serial number would help if time doesn't permit the posting of pictures.

From what I can see... you have what appears to be a very nice sporterized Krag!

Trying to make it original can be a very costly labor of love.

Providing the additional pic/information will help us to provide you the info you might need for further decisions about how to progress.

p.s. I've also been eyeballing that stock on EBay! Wink

'jnida' - Your original Krag rear-sight screw-holes can be easily salvaged.

The holes are likely filled with original screws with the head cut off. From the color, the holes may possibly just be plugged with Lead. (I've encountered both situations).

I would remove them by first, lightly, 'center-punching' the center of the exposed screw shanks/plugs. (If they are Lead, this will be revealed).

Next, with a small diameter twist drill, carefully drill a straight hole, downward, into the center of the 'plug'/headless-screw. (The drill you use and hole that you make should be far smaller in diameter than the plug and its threads).

I do this procedure carefully with an electric hand-drill and the barrel supported in a vise with 'safe' jaws. I make the hole about 3/32" deep into the 'plug'. I brush a bit of 'liquid wrench' on the circumference of the plug, say a prayer, and then tap a small screwdriver into my hole, getting a 'mechanical fit'. I unscrew the shank or plug, holding the screwdriver firmly in place with one hand and griping & levering the screwdriver's rotation with pliers in the other hand.

It has worked every time (5 or 6)!

BTW - The stock and hand-guard, you asked about, would fit your model 1898. It seems expensive to me for a cut-down rifle stock and cracked hand-guard. The hand-guard is for use with the model 1896 rear-sight.

FWIW - You might want to contact one of the KCA Vendors and see if they can do a better deal on a stock.

Sorry to read that you sporterized Krag is not going to workout for you according to another one of your post. Undecided

As BR had mention before... You could possibly double your money on your $100 purchase if you decide to sell.

BTW: Sporterized Krags can be a wonderful thing... here's a sporter that I put back together after refinishing the stock a few days ago.

The stock appears to be similar to yours.

'Local Boy' - Very nice job on your Sporting Krag!

BTW - Good looking 'Stormy Kromer' cap. How are your fellow Alaskans accepting it?
Boy, that 'camo' sling really works with your floral carpet, (The plaid carpet? .... not so much)!

Hey BR thanks for you design input!... You're quite the fashionista!

Thought I'd mix things up instead of using the old gray blanket.

Can't say I started a 'Stormy Kromer' fashion trend up here, but I have received a few complements.

I like my Kromer...Keeps my head warm and stays put during the windy spells we often encounter here in the valley.

You mind if I add your rifle to the KCA serial number database?
