Several Model 1898 rifles.  Claims they have been in an US arsenal for the last 100 years.

(From the age of P. T. Barnum - In Arsenal for 100 years, untouched by human hands)!

Does that make the description of the "bright shiny mirror bores" suspect?

Most of my Krags have been touched by many civilian hands before mine and they are still in great condition. Patina comes from more than just sitting in an arsenal vault somewhere! There's a lot to many stories from those hands that have cared for and shot my rifles that ones that have been stored forever can't tell.

But, I'm sure they'll sell. People often pay a premium for the story, whether or not it is true or verifiable.

Do U.S. arsenals still dispose of firearm inventory to the public?  Just curious.

Off the top of my head:

Things vary with political climate, during "Clinton Years", it required loud public outrage to stop the government from paying for mass destruction of 'obsolete' M1 Garands.

Basically, since 1903, 'civilian sales' were allowed through Director of Civilian Marksmanship, now called CMP (Civilian Marksmanship Program). There has always been criteria to 'screen' buyers. The program was founded to encourage and develop marksmanship in the U. S. civilian population.

From 1903 to 1960's, NRA membership was a requirement.

When I bought my DCM M1 Garand in the 1980's (for approximately $121), an FBI background check, Proof of Citizenship, proof of competitive shooting involvement, and membership in a State Shooting Association or DCM Affiliated Club was required. (I waited almost two years for my order to be processed). BTW - You sent a Postal Money Order with the Application, you were happy and patiently waited, with excitement, for the Mailman to bring you a rifle!

Things & system have changed much with creation of CMP.

Search CMP to find current purchase requirements and items available. Sales are now done through North and South CMP 'Stores' at Camp Perry and Anniston.

CMP has become very cognizant of Collector Values. Current application process, and money you deposit, to get into the 'Lottery', for a chance to buy a 'released' G.I. .45acp Model 1911 Pistol, reflect this.

In relatively recent memory the CMP sold: 'Greek' 1903 Springfield returned rifles, 'Danish' returned M1 Garands, Bavarian Forestry Dept. returned M1 carbines, and VFW returned Krags.
Some collector/enthusiast/shooters probably did well purchasing this stuff on lucky trips to the CMP Store! Some of this stuff is now getting 're-sold'.

Back in the old days, a lot of obsolete stuff was probably sold in large lots at official auctions to firms like Bannerman's.

Thank you: In the 1960's my dad and uncle both bought 1903A3 rifles from the DCM. They were made by Remington and are in excellent condition.  They cost $16.50. I still have dads bill of sale. Back then you sent a money order and the rifle was delivered to your house. Times have changed quite a bit. I still have the rifle and it shoots great. My uncle sporterised his and my cousin has it. Dad must have foreseen the future and left his stock.

Where in the U.S. is "Yankee Artifacts" store located?

It would be interesting to know the whole story on this batch of Krags.

I've seen these and questioned the validity of the claim. Whenever I see someone trying to "create" a story about rifles to try to make them seem more special for sale, it raises my suspicion that they are hiding something that would make them less appealing. I'm just not interested, I guess.

Good fortune to anyone who buys one of these. You might get a rifle worthy of the price paid. That's the important thing.

I've always tried to follow the advice to buy the rifle, not the story. (Unless it is listed in the SRS, of course!)

Hi, I'm a CMP guy so I'm familiar with the original thread on the CMP Forum. That's how I found this place. I like the claim shinny mirror bores, but those are some bad pictures, regards, Mike
