Lt. Col. Charles Dupuy was transferred to take over the 311th Machine Gun Battalion in December, 1917. He found the men ill-trained and with little moral. They had a few Krag rifles and carbines, but he had them packed up and sent to the Ordnance Department. He concentrated on training with machine guns. He wrote a book, which is in the link below.
