I was paging through my 2nd edition of Poyer's American Krag book last night and ran across an interesting paragraph that I don't remember reading before. Poyer states, from an un-named source, that:

Towards the end of the Krag's production life in 1904, a few rifles were converted to carbines by the simple expedient of changing barrels, rear sights and stocks. These can be identified by the fact that the "8" in "Model 1898" was over-stamped "9." Collectors should note that the "9" was stamped with a die of the same type font and size as the "8" it replaced.

We have debated this over-stamp finding on some of our Krags that we have displayed here at KCA.

This sheds a new light, apparently, if we trust Poyer's statement, on this anomaly.
