Dec. issue of "Handloader" magazine,  Brian Pierce's column had an interesting letter on 170 gr 30-30 bullets in Krag loads.  Brian's take was their ogive was better suited for Krags than spire points, and more accurate.  Thoughts ?

I'm not an authority on the accuracy issue. But for racking a Krag into battery, round nose has less professed issues than spire point. For reloading I have settled on Hornady round nose in 180 grain. More than anything, I have settled on 180 grain since both Remington and Winchester have manufactured their 30-40 ammo in those grains and I go back and forth between my reloads and their loaded ammo when I can easily find it at an OK price. I figured they also must be on to something since they both compete with that weight. This is likely not the reasoning most would use, it just works for me. I could find other loadings to be more accurate, but I am not there yet.

That being said, I've shot my great grandfather's 1895 Winchester in 30-40 Krag using round nose and spire points in different weights, both Winchester factory ammo and our own reloads. In that particular gun my brother and I have found that the Nosler spire point in 200 grain shot exceedingly better than anything else we tried.

I know a guy who shoots a 150 gr RN (30-30) bullet and shoots CMP matches in the 290s!  I tried them and had terrible accuracy.  Again, as I've said many times, not all Krags like the same ammo.
