can you make rear sight screws out of 8-32 screws ... yes they are the same diameter as the krag screws only there 32 TIP instead of the krag 30 TPI ... they fit very well and screw in easy... to test out my theory I made some and used a 8-32 die to thread them and they worked .. Disclaimer I would not use this as a substitute they have screws on Ebay .. I was fun to make and try ...

Nice. What stock did you use for these screws? Another screw?

I was using 5/16 c360 brass rod ... I have made screws out of steel bolts ... I look on Ebay under "vintage tap die" you can get these really nice tap and die sets that are 100 years old for cheep ... I look for any thing that has 26 TPI and 30 TPI ... all the other krag screws are 26 TPI English bicycle thread ... im still looking for a 8-30 die the must have them somewhere ..

Nice. I have four or five old sets from my brother and dad. I'll have to get them out and check to see what treasures might be hiding in there.

Thanks for sharing.

How did you shape the brass screw blanks, do you have a non screw cutting lathe like a Taig?
If you did that with a drill press and a file I am impressed!

WOWSERS, you are talented!

I gave a Taig lathe to my nephew, I think he was 13 or 14 at the time. He did some amazing decorative stuff with it. I have not looked at their price list lately but they used to be cheap.

Here's one of my secrets .... Have you ever broke a tap off .. makes rework really hard ... I use minwax furniture Polish it stickes to the tap or die really well ... Smells nice and keeps everything from rusting ... Holds on to the shavings really well and then you can just brush them in the garbage ..... Also I was looking at taps and they have 8-30 taps still make them ...
