Winchester 1917

Thought I’d share my 1917. Winchester made 465,980 1917’s. This was part of the Canadian lend/lease which I believe was limited to ~100,000. I believe this to be 100% original with all Winchester parts and no arsenal rebuild and no refinished parts. The barrel is dated 10-18 and the serial number puts this at an 11-18 manufacturing date. The bore is a mirror and it’s a tack driver at 100 yards.

Beautiful rifle and with a great bore! I'd love to have one so nice. I have an M1917 Enfield but your Winchester is much nicer.

I like how you said they made 465,980 of these and your serial number is 471,792! Must be something there I don't know about their serial numbering.

Thanks for sharing. Love Mil Surp firearms.

Well, you got me on that one.  Grabbed the total production number off the Wikipedia and evidently you can't believe everything you read.  I love it and have gotten used to the forward cocking mechanism.  I'll definitely have to check sources better next time.  I do know that Winchester produced the fewest of the contracted 1917's.

Did some more digging and found this article:
(You need to Login to view media files and links)

According to the article, the number I provided was what was produced by Winchester as of November 1, 1918. Winchester continued to produce rifles until approx April of 1919. Ultimately Winchester produced a total of ~580,000 rifles.

Truly a gorgeous example there, the Canadian home guard purchased rifles seem mostly unaffected by the numerous American rebuild programs. We must have held back pristine rifles, and used them for sales such a this. The others I have seen are mostly original and well taken care of. Yours is exceptional. Thanks for sharing.
Ferris' book tables by manufacturer list your serial at 12/'18
I have an early Winchester that was given to the Danes by Canada later on. Imported back here by CAI in the '60's. A well traveled rifle!

Thank you. I was in a bidding war with someone else on it and was afraid I got caught up in the moment when the time expired. I’m very pleased with it and it’s an amazing shooter as well. Now I see beater Winchesters going for more than I paid.
