Krag rifle belonging to General Frederick Dent Grant, apparently, General U. S. Grant's son.

I have never seen a nicely engraved Krag. This one is gorgeous with an interesting provenance.

I don't know who can afford this, other than a museum, but it certainly is nice to look at. This would be one Krag I wouldn't take out and shoot!

Very nice Krag with a neat history.

I wasn't aware of an "Officer's Model" category of Krags?

Wow, $30,000 starting bid with a 21.5% premium!!!

Hey, maybe my son will buy it and give it to his old dad as a birthday gift!

Nah, probably not.  Embarrassed

I saw a single action Colt on Antiques Road Show this week. No provanonce but nicely engraved with mother of pearl grips. Estimated $25,000.00. This Krag with history will likely go up with bidding. Or not.

Thanks for sharing 'Whig'. That is a very interesting Krag.

It would be great to have a good look at its "Model 1899" marking to see if it is one of the '1899 over-strikes', (with a 9 struck over the last 8).

I believe its serial number, #429596, would make it the highest known model 1899 carbine.

From Poyer's tables and Mook's projections, this receiver, (429596), was likely made in December, 1902, or January, 1903. The 1903 'Acceptance Cartouche' is cool.

I copied a (2017) Jouster posting by Joe Farmer that mentions a 'Block of one' model 1899 carbines being made at Springfield Armory in fiscal year 1902.
(IIRC - Farmer believed it was carbine #420813).

Possibly, the 'Frederick Grant' Model 1899 carbine is a second one or didn't 'appear on the books' given its "Presentation" status?

FWIW - I imagine the "1898" date that appears on the 'Name-Plate' commemorates Frederick Dent Grant's return to Federal Service in 1898, (on a carbine probably presented to him in 1903 or later).

BTW - The other items mentioned in the auction documentation are also up for auction.

Col. Grant's Rolling-Block "Wedding Gift".

This Remington Rolling-Block may be more interesting historically than the model 1899 Krag.

Col. Frederick Dent Grant used it Out-West, when Hunting with Custer.

The Engraver missed a spot!  Roll Eyes

(Don't you wish most Krag receivers had retained their vibrant 'case-hardened colors)?

(I entered this unusual documented carbine on the KCA 'Serial Number List').
