1909 Townsend Whelen Book

Here is a relatively early Townsend Whelen book (1909), with many references to the Krag rifle, titled "Suggestions To Military Riflemen". The Krag received nearly equal press as the 1903 Springfield due to the Krag at that time was still being used by the Navy, the Marine Corps, the Philippine Constabulary and military schools.

So how do you pronounce the good Colonel's last name and the cartridge named after him?

Right or wrong, and I have heard others pronounce this way, I pronounce it the same way as Waylon Jennings pronounced his name.

There are a lot of threads on various forums about the pronunciation.  Two posts on different forums both state how Townsend pronounced it and both are different, lol!.

Whee-lin
Wh-laylin

According to wikipedia his friends called him Townie.....James Howe naming it 35 Townie would have eliminated all the confusion.

"Waylon" works for me ... sling, cartridge, the man.

How do you pronounce "Knute"? (Newt, Ka nute)?

Chassepot, Dreyse, Garand, Mannlicher-Schoenauer, Krag-Jorgensen, Farquharson, Mosin-Nagant, Bethier? ... dang! (Spell-Check doesn't like any of them).

Ka-newt. You know, like the phrase:

Did you ka-nock your ka-nee on the door ka-nob?
