Fake Carbine Model 1896 Stock

Here is a very interesting Model 1896 Carbine stock. Where someone cut out a square junk of the stock, and placed a wood piece with a fake 1898 Cartouche. It appears they made the fake Cartouche with a small piece of wood, with some kind of resin, glued it in, then painted the stock. My question is wow, all the work to do this? The stock appears to be a real carbine stock, I have never seen anything like this. I am going to steam the stock and fix it. It will be a good shooting stock. Has anyone ever seen anything like this??? The M1 garand stocks have a lot of fake stampings. But this is crazy! Unless I just destroyed some rare stock...

That is bizarre! Looks like it's ready for the burn pile.

If you can resurrect a reasonable carbine stock out of that, you done saved a wreck.

Keep us informed about your progress.

Thanks for sharing.

Some guys just gotta make stuff more better!

This stock sure looks salvageable to me.

Probably the best fix would be to clean and true-up the cavity in your stock.
It could then be nicely filled with a rectangular 'patch' of black walnut (preferably, from a scrap U.S. stock) that will fit the margins closely.

(The patch should be thicker than the recess. You can 'bevel' or angle the edges for a tight fit).

Glue the patch in place with some 'Acra-Glas'. You can temporarily wrap the bedded patch in place with masking-tape.

Once the epoxy-bedding has hardened, you can file down the 'proud' walnut patch to conform with the stock contour.

I don't think 'steaming' your stock will benefit this wound.
A tight clean patch of a similar walnut is a nice repair in a stock that will be refinished.

An example of fitting a 'patch' and rough filing to contour:

Thank you! You are right on. To much meat gone. Amazes me on how many stocks have been messed with on the Krag series of rifles and carbines.  Smiley
