Looking for help on the history of the guns.  One is the 30 inch rifle, the other has been shortened.  I'll focus on the 30 inch rifle first.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

'Knight' - Welcome to the KCA Forum.

I can't quite make out the serial number of your Krag.

It appears it may be #121169 or 121168?

US. Model 1898 rifles in that number range were assembled at Springfield Armory around July to August, 1898.

Close & clear photos of your rifle's sights and markings will beget more feedback.

Knight-

Welcome to the Krag Collector's Association website. You can search around and look at the photos and go back through the forum postings and find tons of information about Krags. Most of the stuff posted can help you understand some of the history of Krags and give you an idea of what you have.

Inheriting any older firearms is great! You're very fortunate to have them. Many Krags have been altered or cut down for hunting over the years since they were used by the military. Springfield Armory did all of the "official" manufacturing and up dates to the Krags but many other gun smiths have worked on them also and frequently butchered them in the process.

A lot of us have tried to repair or restore our Krags to be closer to what they were originally made to look like.

Sporterized Krags are altered for hunting or shooting purposes and are often still quite attractive and accurate. Any Krag that has been altered from its original military configuration is not usually as collectible or valuable to some people but when you have a family piece, regardless of the condition, it can be "priceless!"

So, post pictures and tell us more about your treasures. We'd love to help you figure out what you have and how to enjoy them the most.

Welcome again and thanks for stopping by!

I think this private just got the word that his unit was exchanging their model 1892 magazine rifles for cosmoline encrusted model 1896 magazine rifles, at morning Reveille.

Knight,

The pictures you have posted look good with the size and clarity. When you are posting, look to the left side of the post area and you will see the word "Attachments". If you click on the down arrow numerous times, you can open up 5 "Choose File" buttons to post up to 5 pictures per post. Just keep making new posts if you want to show more than 5 pictures.

Keep the pictures below 700 kb size.

Your rear sight is a Model 1896 rifle sight. The script "P" is a proof stamp from Springfield Armory.

Keep 'em coming!

'Knight' - Small letter "N" is a Stocker or Sub-Inspector's stamp.

Wood grain in wrist is very pretty. It appears it may be Italian walnut. A lot of imported stock wood was used in the 1899 to 1901 period, due to shortage of cured domestic Black walnut stock blanks.

Please confirm digits of serial number.

121166 is the serial number.

'Knight' - Neither of your Krag serial numbers appeared in the government documents that were researched for SRS data.

Your Krag, #437489, was assembled around February to March, 1903.
