Hello everyone, the name is Allen and I'm new to the site, but I've had my M.1898 for years. Passed down through the family from my Great Grandfather. Mine is completly sporterized. The only thing I can verify is still original is the receiver. The barrel is probably different, the sights are different, and I do not believe the stock is not original in any way. But I still love it, and I've been hunting with this gun every year for the last 20 years. I'll include some pictures.

Sweet. I know there are those that are into unaltered vintage firearms. And I wouldn't alter one myself, but vintage sporterized military arms will have their day in the sun. They filled a need and can be unique in themselves. I'd own unaltered arms if I could budget myself better. For now I've got a M1898 Mauser, M1891 Mosin Nagant, M1917 American Enfield all vintage sporters. And my recently acquired sporterized M1896 Krag tops it off. All shooters. And if your Krag was passed down, priceless. My M1917 was my Dad's and it will be passed on, I've got 5 sons.

I'm just north of Detroit (Roseville).

I'd love to know if it was a family member or previous owner that made all the changes. Sadly, my father is the only one left to tell, and he didn't even know about the magazine selector on the gun. Someone had Marable sights installed on the gun way back, and my family is from the west side of the state (Bridgman, MI), so I'm going to call them and see what I can find out about these sights. Maybe when they were made so I can get a better idea as to who had them installed.
