Well the serial number is out side of the known range for 1898 carbines. The stock is correct carbine stock but the sling bar and ring were not installed on long forend carbine stocks as long stock carbines were ment to be carried in saddle scabbards. The front sight has Bubba written all over it!! (Even though it might have been a correct Krag sight at one time!!)I would say not a carbine. Should be a fun shooter and a handy hunting rifle though

Oddly enough, it is listed as a 98 rifle in the SRS data:

Thanks for the above info.I was advised to measure the barrel OD at the front end.
.650" @ muzzle
.652" @ front of front sight
.657 @ rear of front sight"

Does this tell us anything? Thanks

Not really - unlike .45-70 trapdoors, where a cut rifle barrel will be too fat - Krag carbines utilized the rear 22" of the 30" rifle barrel, so there is no re-tapering issue. Also, there is no mistaking an original Krag front sight. Those that look bad are bad.

OK Gents, I guess I can put this one to bed. It will be a shooter. I thank you all for the information and thank forums like this where you can learn. I got this in a trade about 20 years back for a Mauser sporter. I am a lot more educated now. Ed

On the other hand, you do have a "letterable" receiver, a lot of others can not say that.

Ned I guess I am ignorant of the term " Letterable". Can you help me on that one? Thanks. Ed

It is listed in the Springfield Research Service data base. For a fee you can get a letter stating the available info and history of your rifle. It can be a bit of a gamble because you don't know for sure what you will get before you pay. Some can be one sentence some can be pages.
