Dick, I hear what you are saying.  But, it may have simply been a small way of protesting.  Then again, it may not be true at all.

What is true is that he was a Jew who was born and lived in Vienna.  In 1938, the acting troupe he performed with were in Switzerland when Hitler annexed Austria.  He then emigrated to the US, leaving his Jewish family to suffer whatever fate the Nazis had in store for them.

I totally agree with you Dick...  If my family had been killed, I would never even have involved with the show!  I think it's more that the prop guys weren't worried about authenticity!  It wouldn't have been the first time...  Many shows back then were for more entertainment value than anything else.

By the way, speaking of rifles on TV... did you all know that the first 2 seasons of The Beverly Hillbillies, Jed runs into the cabin after shootin up that oil and lays a 1873 Trapdoor rifle on the table?  He also shoots it in an episode in the first season where he joins Drysdale's gun club!

Back to the original topic:  I seem to recall that I read somewhere the actor playing Sgt. Shultz had many family members killed by Nazis.  As a result, he refused to carry a Nazi weapon in the TV series.  The prop people pulled out a rifle that looked close--a Krag.

A Krag rifle, albeit Norwegian, "could" be correct as a POW camp weapon since the Krauts issued weapons from occupied countries to non-front line troops and police.
