1898 front band

I just acquired a 1898 Krag rifle for my son. It looks to be all original except sometime in history someone has cut the stock to carbine length. I was wanting to restore it back to its original self . Does anyone know if a 03 Springfield front band will interchange? They seem to be more readily available.

don't think an '03 will work, to big in dimension. are you adding fore end wood to existing stock or have you acquired a rifle stock?

Try S&S Firearms.  They have a lot of Krag parts.  Not cheap.

I haven't bought a stock yet. I was looking at the one Boyd's has on their website. Numrich has the 03 band for around 22 bucks and are out of stock on the krag bands. S&S has the front band for 85 dollars. Guess I will have to work a little overtime. Thanks for the info.

Just a thought, you might want to consider adding a fore arm to your existing stock to bring it back to rifle length. I you have some woodworking skills it is a very economical alternative to stock replacement. Might ease the sticker shock for the upper band. I've done a couple, and while they are not original when finished, neither is a replacement stock. Good luck regardless.

The Krag I acquired had a 1903 barrel band on it. This band appeared to have been cut at the bottom and welded. I got an original Krag band from S & S to replace it. Much happier with it now that I have sling swivel.

My wife ordered me a new stock from Boyd's last last night for Christmas. For my first Krag I wanted to do a restoration for my son so he would have a nice shooter. There seems to be a good supply of cut down Krags out there so i will keep the forearm idea in my mind for my next project. I have decided to go ahead and order the correct band from s&s. thanks for the info.
