Stock bedding tips

I bought an 1899 carbine with a stock that had been sanded into almost oblivion.  I have a new Boyd's stock for it and have done most of the major work in getting everything to fit in properly.  I have bedded several '03 stocks and know what to do there and how to do it.  But, this is my first restocking of a Krag.  Can anyone give me any pointers on how I should bed this rifle...where should I have contact and where not?

Thanks

I would suggest you get a set of Stockmaker's Hand Screws if you don’t have them already. I have bedded several Krags without these and have had mixed results. I have not bedded a new stock – only sported stocks or damaged originals. On an older stock, the biggest problem tends to be years of over-tightening of the rear action screw and the resulting crushing of the wood – an over-scraped new stock could be similar. Subsequently, the action tends to pivot either on its heal or the tang of the sideplate (when the hand screws are tightened). The resulting barrel flexure (restrained by the band) can cause remarkable vertical inaccuracy! By not remedying this issue beforehand, it gets messy adjusting the bedding afterwards. For the next attempt, I will bed the rear of the action first and then the barrel. The front belly of the action, from the front action screw up to the barrel collar, I no longer plant to bed – it only tends to reintroduce the pivot/flexing issue. If there are lightening slots under the barrel, I fill these with bits of steel prior to bedding – the shorter and/or slenderized sporter stocks do not otherwise manage recoil effectively.
