Just bought a CMP Krag

Wow...just found this forum...awesome!!!!

I was at the CMP store a few weeks ago looking to buy a Garand.  I ran across a handful of white/chromed krags that sparked my interest.  They were pretty cheap, so I picked one up on a whim.

After doing some digging (I love this stuff), it was extremely interesting to me that these were used for Military Service for less than 10 years, then a number of them were "loaned" (I've read quite a bit that this term is used very loosely!) to VFW/Americal Legion Posts for burials, etc.  The posts had them chromed/painted, etc.

Question 1:  Does anybody know when they started using these for funerals, etc.  World War I, II, Vietnam? Just kind of a curious question.

The stock of the gun is kind of beat up.  The chroming is actually pretty good with a couple trouble spots...not too bad.  The CMP armorer had it marked: OK HDSP+; OK bore; Y grade.  The gun has the front sight (I've read that a lot of these were removed) and the rear site is mising the slide (and is broke in one place), but the trigger, bolt, etc. seem to be functioning.  There is a problem with the magazine box, as the follower does not easily move back and forth.  Don't know if this is a "being dirty" problem, or what.

I am in process of fixing this guy up.  I really don't care about value or how much it is worth when I get done....I just want to repaint the stock, clean up the chrome and make it fully functional so it can be a really interesting (and different - with an interesting history) addition to my collection.  Don't think I'll actually put any bullets through it...I probably need to think about that one (and welcome any input).

Questions:  Does anyone have a resource for how to disassemble the magazine box/full disassembly of the rifle.

Anyone have this "follower sticking" problem...is it typically just need some lubricant?

Thanks in advance for reading my post!  I'm excited that I found this forum and will definately become a member.

If no on else steers you somewhere else, PM me your email address and I can send you a PDF file of dis-assembly instructions from the old military surplus rifle site.
