Trying to learn more about my rifle.

I have a 94 with an SN that reads 679, it seems to have had a lot of custom work done on it.  It is in great condition and shoots well. But I think the work was done at Springfield as a presentation piece. Does anyone have any information of Kraags made that way?

Beautiful condition... especially the bluing.  I'm no expert, but I would hazard a guess that this was NOT modified by the Springfield Armory.  I'm sure that some of the more senior members could speak to that better than I!  Do you know what your barrel length is?  It's most likely a cutdown, and the front sight is definitely not original.  What do you suppose the screw on the barrel just forward of the receiver is for?

I think the receiver and barrel are tapped for a long telescopic sight.

Yes, this is definitely not a Springfield Armory job.  They never did anything like this.  It is a very nice job of sporterization, probably by a good gunsmith.  Let me know if you think about selling it.

Best regards,
Tom

Someone sure did a beautiful job on the stock!!  A little different checkering pattern and you'd never know the grasping grooves were there.

I don't like most sporters in general, and I detest 99% of faux/wannabe Mannlicher stocks, but that is pretty!!

That's not a bad sporter considering that it looks like the original Armory stock that had a some wood added to it for the pistol grip.

With some better (sharper) pictures it might be possible to tell who did the work.

Most are poorly done but there are a few nice ones out there.

One by Bubba Griffin & Bubba Howe.

I don't know the name of the Bubba that cut down and sported my first Krag... but I hate the stock!  It now sports a new front blade and a 1902 rear sight... and eventually, it will have a proper stock too!  Here it is in the condition I purchased it in (in 1983 from a Mississippi pawn shop).

There's a nice sleek stock hiding in there, you just have to take off about a pound of walnut to set it free!  Firstly - no Monte Carlo hump on a Krag, ever, period!  Actually, "period" is the watchword - keep it to '20s-'30s lines and you have a fighting chance.

Actually, I've considered re-shaping the stock.  I would love to lose the cheek pad and hump... and shave the remaining stock down to a respectible size, and especially - weight!  Maybe I'll do that afterall.

Thanks for the replies. Tried to contact Springfield digging up info on this rifle. They told me nothing and then asked if I'd like to donate it to their museum.   Never going to sell this piece...lol  It shoots just fine too.

Pretty. I wouldn't say a Monte Carlo never belongs on a Krag, though. Behold the Mayberry Krag:

I call it that as the E.C. Bishop white line stock dates to the Andy and Barney era. Very tasteful MC, with the length of pull shortened for me, it's really more a smaller scallop out of the toe of the stock. Can't you just see Andy taking a Krag like that up near Hopkin's Lake in November for opening weekend?
